I have been sitting on an old Evinrude 35hp for quite a long time. What should I do. It turns freely and I think I could get it going but would I be better off letting it go to someone who will better appreciate it. Are these motors hard to work on. Are they RARE? i havn't seen many like mine with the black and red cowl.

They are cool. They were the "cadillac" of the Evinrude '57 linuep, as they are all chromed out.

They are fairly easy to work on, if you decide to get her going there is plenty of help right here. Is it seized at all? If not, what is the compression?

Post a pic if you can.

Re: 1957 Evinrude 35hp Lark

Lark was the deluxe version of the BigTwin with the fancy cowl. Not that rare, but a great old motor when renovated. I have a '57 Lark on my pontoon boat and it is a reliable and great runner. I've towed my share of stranded newer boats/motors with my Lark, and wouldn't trade it for a newer 35hp with all the electronics. If your motor has good compression (mine runs 125psi and 128psi), most everything else can be brought up to standard for about $100-150 in parts assuming you have to replace the coils, points, condensers, wires and plugs, install a carb kit, install a new impeller and replace the seals. Yours may not need all that. Mine only needed a new impeller and gearcase seals, and she's been running like a champ for 4 years now without so much as a carb cleaning. Every spring, I keep thinking I ought to pull the carb, clean it and rebuild it, but she always starts up and runs so good, I hesitate to monkey with it. I figure, if it ain't broke, don't mess with it.

I too am a proud owner of a '57 Big Twin 35. My personal favorite. I bought a '57 Lark at the same time, but it was submerged and in horrible shape, so I ended up parting it out.
I'm with Lindy46, I would rather have it, than a modern one. Of course, as you can see, all of my motors are older ones anyhow. That's mostly because I'm an antique nut. Tune that baby up, I bet it'll run good. Pull the flywheel and post a pic of the coils.
