1957 evinrude 35hp ???

I have a 1957 evinrude 35hp motor, what i want to know is: does this motor have babbet or needle bearings?

Roller bearings on each end of the crank, needle bearing at center of crank, needle bearings on each end of con. rod. But if you're thinking of running at 50:1, Don't.

Thanks for the info, I havent got mine running yet. the starter is dragging pretty bad and rope starting has resulted in 10 sec of sputter and 2 really nice blisters.

These older OMC are noted for bad coils w cracks,corrision etc. If they look the least bit questionable replace.They are readily available.
If they look ok a careful cleaning and adj. of the points will probably improve spark.

you will need a harmonic balancer puller, and # 8 1/4 x20 bolts to pull the flywheel. don't use regular bplts, as the will strip off in the fly wheel. #8 only.

It has got about 7/16 of spark, should be enough to run, wont it?
the carb is cleaned very well, but i think i need to dial in the raitos and she should fire right up. That is, after i dissasemble the starter and give it a through cleaning!

Regardless of whether you've got the spark - check the coils. If they're shiny plastic with no cracks - you're good to go. Clean & gap the points and go on your way. If they are chalky looking or cracked - trash 'em. They may fire now, but will fail when you can least afford them to.

And definitely go for the 24:1 ratio. Those motors are built quite loosely compared to modern motors, with larger tolerances than we'd see today. The oil acts as much as a sealant as it does a lubricant and the motor needs a certain volume in the fuel to achieve that...

mine coils looked good, before i fire it the first time. ran a few minutes, and i lost a coil. i replace the coils, comdemsers, points, plug wires, plugs, and impeller for $136. now i have a new engine. fires 1st time no choke.

thank you guys very much, I wasnt planning on trying 50:1 I just wanted to know what kind of bearings I had. The coils are shiny and look great, I hope they will hold up(Ihav a lot more time than money) But thats a lot more than I can say for the starter. Does anyone have one of these old auto-lite starters laying around?

if the armature is still good it can be rebuilt. take to a auto starter/alternator shop. mine was shot and it was $180 to replace.

It has a wire burnt on the rotor, unless I can rewrap it I think its toast. Any good ideas where I can start looking for one?

The numbers get very confusing. There seem to be a lot of numbers for different starters that will interchange, although they MAY take a different bracket. Also, they kept making the starters more powerful as years went by, which made them physically longer in size. The longer ones require an additional mounting blate or suppoert bracket on the bottom. Again, with the right bracket and support, they probably will interchange....I think.

You do have to watch for the hood mounting method when selecting brackets. As I said, it gets confusing. Even I would have to take the parts in hand and compare to see if they'll work.

So anyway, here's what the quick reference book says for the starter motors:
385401 = 1957-58
381865 = 1959-61
380239 = 1962-76
