1957 evinrude. Just got this motor running in a barrell and it was running good without the clamshell hood on it. Put the hood on it and I can't get it to rev up. Raise up one side of hood and it runs fine? What could this be?

There is no engine manufactured that will run properly in a barrel if the hood is on. That results in having the carburetor draw in the engine's own exhaust fumes.

First guess is the float level is to high, the cover is working a little like a choke?

Hey Joe thanks for the response. Thats kinda what I was thinking because there was alot of smoke. kinda like it was choking the motor out.

Make sure the plug wires will move freely throughout the throttle range (engine off in forward gear) when you have the cowling attached. If the side you raise up is the wire side (it is), perhaps the wires stop the throttle when they bind on the cowling?
