I am replacing the impellar for a 57 Evinrude 7.5 hp and i am not sure how to disconnect the shifting rod to drop the lower end down. Can anyone help?

Some of those 50's OMC motors have a small access plate on one side of the lower unit. Remove two screws, pull the plate and you can get to the shift shaft linkage. Remove the bottom screw in the linkage and the shafts will separate. Earlier ones weren't that easy, some you even had to pull the powerhead. Don't know for sure about yours but someone else will answer soon...cross you fingers and check to see if you have the access plate on the side of the leg.

There is no access plate on the side. My 1960 has one but not this 57. I have the new impellar but i just need to know how to get that shift rod off.

A nasty feature of these engines is, like the 5.5, you must remove the engine itself from the midsection to access the shift rod linkage beneath it. So you need a new powerhead base gasket in addition to the w/p kit.
When you get the engine off, remove and note the position of the components of the bottom crank seal (they'll be on the driveshaft), then rotate the driveshaft until the pin through it lines up with the slot in the midsection and the whole lower unit drops off.
