I have a 1957 or 58 big twin and I just put on a different "valve head cover??" The cover that the spark plugs go into and that one was off of a 1957. Anyways I went to start it up today and notice that water was pouring out of it on the bottom left corner where there is about a quarter sized hole that my original cover didnt have. The hole you can tell has always been there but the cover I had on did not have that hole. My question is is water suppose to come through that hole or what it causing it to come through it. I am in desperate need of help and cant afford to take it to the repair shop. Please help if you can. Thanks Matt

The first picture is the new one with the hole and the second one is the old one without the hole.

As far as i remember the 1957/8 doesn't have a tell tale for the cooling

if i'm right it all comes out of the exhaust at the top of the leg

what year did the new head come off? it could be the tell-tale exit.

does the water pump out of it when engine running in water?

cheers

I was going to replace the whole powerhead because the bottom cylinder didnt have any compression so I bought this powerhead from a guy that told me it was 1957 probably because he knew I needed a 1957 and it turned out that motor was locked up that I bought and he told me it had good compression and everything but didnt. It turned out that the gaskets was really torn on my old one so I just switched the whole cover out with the one that I bought. So Im not sure what year it is but he said it was a 1957. Water was coming out of the exuast a little but it was only running for a few seconds becuase it kept dieing and i didnt know if this was the reason or not.

It must be a welsh plug hole but I don't recall them on my 35's although it is pretty far down to easily see. If it is, you just need to find the plug and tap it in.

Will it hurt anything to keep it unpluged or does it need to be plugged for the motor to run good?

It needs to be plugged!!! The Welsh plug is missing. Evinrude calls it a core plug. Whatever you call it, it is a thin disc that is dished when new. You put it in the hole, then flatten it, which tightens it into the hole. Don't go beyond flat, or it will get loose again.

The part number originally was 13X426, and that is changed to 306352. Get it from any Evinrude dealer.

Thanks soo much i might just put the original one back on and take the gasket off the one that is on now and put it on the original one if I can take it off without taking the whole powerhead off again. Do you know if that cover will come off without taking anything else off?
Thanks Matt

Not exactly sure what you are attempting to replace, but you can get full access to anything back there by removing the lower rear motor cover (the "pan"). But you probably won't have to.
