First thing is to test your spark with a spark tester, which you can get cheap at an auto parts store.
Your engine will actually run OK on one cylinder, but you'll have no power.

A quick and dirty way to check is to pull one plug wire when it's running. You should hear a difference. It it immediately dies, then it's running on one cylinder and you disconnected the good cylinder. If there is no difference, then you pulled the wire off a bad cylinder. Not foolproof or definitive, but it works when you're out on the water....

I did that but it was in a barrel. Do i need to be in the water to do that. when i unpluged them it wanted to shut off on both of them.

Re: 1957 evinrude rpm problems

That "thing" to check rpm is called a tachometer. About the only one made for that motor anymore is by tinytach. google them

Your motor sounds ok to me. Certainly is not running on one cylinder.

Maybe you want more speed. Everybody does.

The motor might be mounted a bit low and that whale tail isn't exactly drag-free. You are shoving a lot of hardware through the water.

But it certainly looks better than it started out. Be proud of it and be happy.

Well thank you. I really am happy and proud of what I have done to the motor so far. how far down from the bottom of the boat should the motor hang down? that boat in the video was a rental from a lake i have mine on the water now which is a 12 foot vhull (i think its alot heavier than the aluminum one) well if you say it sounds good then i wont mess with nothing but i think i will still get a tach for it anyways just to make sure it is running full trottle.

Re: 1957 evinrude rpm problems

If it's practical to do so, get yourself a tiller extension and move your bod' up to the next seat to help balance the load. I noticed the second set in the jon boat in the video was too far forward.

Even with the whale tail and motor tucked under, the boat is still running stern heavy. If you can get it leveled off better, you should pick up a noticeable speed increase.

EDIT: Speed and RPM are related. If you can get it moving faster, the RPM will increase.

sounds good i will also get more fuel line and extend the gas tank to the front or mid of the boat. one more thing do you think i should move the motor up more if so where should it run. does it suck water in thru the little holes on top of the big wing or the little fin under the big fin?

Re: 1957 evinrude rpm problems

The main water intake is the screen in the leading edge of the underwater exhaust outlet. The holes in the long skinny plate are auxillary intakes for running in reverse when the prop is sucking water away from the main intake.

ohhhhhh ok. so if i move the motor up some and it planes out its ok that the plate with the 3 holes it it comes out of the water. right now it does alright with 2 people in the boat. but oh boy when my 240lb is in there alone she doesnt want to move lol. according to the picture is this thing running right ?

[/QUOTE] Should this plate be even with the bottom of the boat? [QUOTE/]

Yes. How far is the plate below the bottom of the boat?

Re: 1957 evinrude rpm problems

the transom is 15" and the measurement from where the motor clamps to the boat to that plate is 18 to 18 1/2" so i guess around 3 to 3 1/2 inches lower. its funny because i just got a 3.5 sear motor running and ran it on the same boat and it was running smooth not as fast but it was plained out that one measures 15" like the transom.

also i made that big wing for the motor because i was having problems plaining out and that wing brought it way down and helped out alot. maybe now i do have to life the motor up some. if you think i do can you tell me whats a good way to do it. keep in mind that i have a welder here at home so get fancy lol jk

Re: 1957 evinrude rpm problems

Ok so heres pics of the extention I made to the transom, also since I was at it I made a new gear compartment to put the weight to the front. The wing now sits excactly even with the bottom of the boat, I had to go up 2 3/4". i put it in the water by my self and she didnt wanna really plain out. So the next thing im going to do is extend the gas tank to the front of the boat and if that doesnt work im going to try to remove the hydrofoil and see if that helps. (I was in a small pond when I tried it so I dont know if it just wasnt getting enough speed) btw: I put on the wood thomson water sealer and between transom and wood and both peices of wood i put clear roofers sealer and made it water tight.
