1957 Fleetwin driveshaft seal

anybody have any tips or tricks on how to remove that seal?

Yes, be extra careful. Leave the housing in the lower unit and use a seal puller to remove it. Take your time. If you break the housing you will find its hard to replace.

OK thanks...I need a seal puller...OMC dealer or something I can get at a parts or tool store?

I use a cheap claw type puller, but there are lots of different seal pullers available.

I dont think that they have Princess Auto in the States, but all pullers of any type are on sale right now there WB, boy do I love that store! :)

If you are talking about the upper seal in the gearcase, that seal can be rough to get out, with even the proper puller. That seal, and bearing housing is exspensive, if you can find one. I no longer try to pull this seal on this age engine. I bore it out on a lathe, saves a lot of time, grief, exspence.

Or carve most of one side away with a Dremel if you have one. They are a bugger to get out of that thin plate without wrecking the plate. I have a home made tool that I use. A slide hammer type puller may work. Usually doesn't.

Those are a bugger. I cut the top portion in two places with tin snips and use vise grips on one side and then the other to work it out - still difficult though.
