1957 johnson 18 hp , i,ve rebuilt the carb , rebuilt the ignition , rebuilt lowerend , put new gas ,resealed the intake manifold , runs great, but i have water going back to the gastank thru the air hose that puts the pressure in the tank. i doubled checked everything, the gas is new,i was wondering if it could be the bottm seals or gaskets,i"d hate to tear it apart again. thanks.

I don't really know how water could get in that hose. Splice a section of clear hose into the air line, and see if there really is water in that line.

thanks , yes i did that and even spliced a used fuel bowl in the line to collect what was coming out , its sort of a milky liquid, not alot but some, i was wondering if its just air that is suposed to come out or does it send back unused fuel under normal operation ?

i was gravity feeding my 57 5.5 hp, with the air line disconnected, and it spit a quite a bit of fuel from that line, (previous owner attached longer lines to the carb and air line with quick connect fittings). with the motor just idling in a barrel i had to tie a container to the line to keep the mess/waste contained. not sure if its normal, but the motor runs even better now that i cleaned the pressure tank and am running it that way. the gas that was spitting from the air line was frothy, but when captured in a container it settled down and was just gas/oil.

yes, post back and let us know what you find out! catch some of the liquid thats causing concern in a clean clear bottle, allow it to sit awhile, if it is water it should separate from the fuel.

i ran it for awhile and collected about a quart of liquid , i let it settle and it was just gas and oil , the first few minutes was alot of junky looking stuff but it cleared up , it hadnt run for quite a long time , meaning decades , runs like a top now , thanks for all the help , now i'll service the 58 evinrude 18 and hit the river soon with both , again thanks.

Convert it to a modern one-line fuel system with fuel pump.
