1957 Johnson 18hp - Which Yrs & Hp's Share Same Starter?

I want to convert my 18 hp to a electric start as a winter project.

I know many years and hps share the same part and bracket. Does anyone know the year and hp range so I have this before I begin my used part search?

Also where was the starter switch installed on the tiller models?

You'll want the bracket for the 57 - 58 because of the shroud mounting prong on it.

Good call. I was gonna reply and say that an electric starter/bracket off any 22 cube engine would fit but you're right, he would need the prong on the bracket.

Yes, the starter mounting bracket for the 18hp Johnson is unique to 1956 (15hp) and 1957-1958 (18hp) models. The 18hp Evinrude of same years could be modified with a bolt or pin added to the front to handle the cowling mount.

If you can, at least find the correct starter bracket. From there, you'll be able to mount a starter to it, by the two bolts that go through to the bottom of the starter.

I definately have alot of starters, the bracket is what is alluding me in my parts "pile"

So there you go ironhill. Chris will help you out on the starter part and you can try the salvage yards listed in the Top Secret File, for a bracket.
