Anyone out there know anything about replacing an impeller on an old '57 Johnson motor. How do you drop the lower unit? I haven't purchased the manual yet, but will be shortly. I have an owners manual for the '56 Evinrude Lark and it has no details on how to do this. Anyway, anyone want to expound on how to replace the impeller? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Easy. Remove the oval plate from the side of the midsection. Remove the lower screw from the shift rod connector that you will find inside. Remove the six small and one large bolts that hold the lower unit on. Twist the lower unit back and forth slightly while you pull it down. The water pump is right there in front of you.

When you put it back together, use a new o-ring on top end of drive shaft and smear a bit of waterproof grease on the splines. Smear some oil or grease inside the rubber grommet in the pump housing. Continue in reverse order of disassembly.

It will all make sense when you see it. If it doesn't, well....

Important! When you go to put that screw back in the shift rod connector, use a flashlight to peer in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is perfectly aligned with the screw hole. If it isn't, it will wipe the threads off the screw every time. Then it will fall out. But never at dockside...always at least 5 miles down river.

Awesome! It took me a whoppin' 30 minutes to replace. Thanks for the expert tips I am the type that probably would have been stuck out in the lake.

I have one more question. I am new with outboard motors obviously, but is there not a gasket that goes between the lower and upper unit.

Yup, and sometimes you still do it even after rebuilding more than a few waterpumps.

Anyone wanna guess what "yours truly" will be picking up at the OMC/BRP dealr tomorrow? Oh well, I need a set of crush washers for the gearbox drain & vent plugs, anyway!

Yeah - I was putting my '69 Johnson 6hp back together after installing a new water pump kit. I thought I had the link lined up but didn't. Scratch one screw.

BTW, like many screws used in outboards, this one is a nonstandard length. That means the big box home improvment stores don't carry them. I bought one to replace the one that I bunged up, and one as a spare - the cost was $3.50 each.

I didn't buy the link and am hoping that I can dress the threads with a tap. If I have to replace that too, I will be shelling out another $21.00!
