1957 Johnson 3hp - Gas Tank Extra Parts?

I just cleaned the piles of insulation and foam out of the 1957 Johnson 3hp (JW-13) motor that I picked up this summer for $25. When I turn the rope, the prop turns but it's completely drained of fluid - so she's about to get a complete rebuild of gaskets, etc. The first order of business was getting to the motor. When I removed the gas tank, I heard things rattling around. Inside I found a spring and two washers. Does anyone have any clue what these are for and where they go? (see first picture)

They look like the vent damper parts that go inside the fuel tank cap. Could be someone un-screwed the vent knob to far and they fell into the tank.

don't forget to clean out the two crud prone holes in the vent cap under the washer (hard to see but 2 holes are 180 degrees opposed) Internal tank filter (top of valve) likely crudded also ;-)

Yep, they are part of the gas cap. There also is a bead chain somewhere. The primary purpose of the parts is a tether to prevent dropping the cap overboard. Other wise, the motor will still run just fine wirhout the tether

Before you tear down the lower unit, I would would fill it up with fresh oil with new gaskets on the plugs first. It may likely hold oil, just fine. Out of the many 3hp's that I've worked on, they seem to have less issues than the other motors of that vintage.

Thanks everyone. I'll remedy the cap and parts. That's a huge relief.

As for the lower unit, unfortunately for as good of shape it appears to be in something or somebody ripped most of the anti-ventilation plate off. I'll have to visit the boat motor graveyard to find a replacement
