Hi All,
I thought you might appreciate this. My grandfather left me his 1957 Johnson 7.5hp outboard. When I moved to New England, I put it in my shed and it has sat for nearly 20yrs.
My grandfather was meticulous with record keeping. In an old box, I found an original service manual, the owner's manual, the sales receipt and....the "lifetime" warranty from the merchant (a sporting goods store in Chicago).
My family is going to Maine in a couple of weeks and our boat is in the shop (don't get me started...). As it turns out, the place we are going has a 12 foot skiff that can take a small outboard. I didn't think anything of it, until I remembered that I have that old engine and 4 gal pressure fuel tank sitting in the back of the shed.
I dusted it off, got some fresh gas, mixed the crazy ratio required gas/oil mix, fill a tub of water and got it ready to see if she would start. I sprayed some Deep Creep into the spark plug hole, gave it a pull or two and then let it sit for a day.
I connected the gas and gave her pull. She started on the 4th pull! Sweet! She is smoking as all good old fashioned 2 cycles do (more so now because of a heavier than needed oil mix - the side of the gas can and the measurement provided on the oil bottle seemed to differ - I split the difference between the 24-1 on the oil and the mixture stated on the can).
Here are a few pics of the engine. She is 100% original. I have a new waterpump impeller for her and I'll probably need to replace the powerhead gasket when I do that.
Here is a link to her running on you tube....
