How do I go about changing the impeller in this motor? Does anyone have a breakdown of the lower unit to tell me how to take it apart? Thanks to all.

Howdy Kennasdad,
It's a really easy one! First, locate the oval cover on the midsection, take it off and remove the lower bolt on the shift rod connector.
second, take off the four 7/16 bolts and the single 9/16 bolt for the lower unit and drop the assembly. Then just take the screws out of the water pump cover and pull off the impeller. BE CAREFUL you don't lose the little key that sits in the drive shaft and holds the impeller from turning on the shaft! They're tiny! Also, you'll need to reuse the o-ring on the top of the driveshaft so don't lose it.
Now, I like to put a little grease on the fins of the new impeller (hope you bought BRP brand) and put it in the water pump making sure it fits over the key in the shaft. When you go to put the cover on, be sure to turn the driveshaft clockwise while pushing gently on the water pump cover. Now tighten your screws. then reinstall your lower unit. Be sure that you get the water tube back in the water pump grommet when you reinstall. Also, make sure the little retaining groove in the shift shaft is matching up with the bolt hole in the shift rod connector. Then reinstall the connector bolt and you're ready to go! BTW, holler if you need some pics and I'll post a couple for something you don't fully understand.
I LOVE my '57 18hp!

I did the same thing on my 57 last summer. One thing I can suggest is if you have any inkling at all that yours might be a salty dog do yourself a favor and just pop for the whole kit with housing, screws and all. That's what I did and I'm glad. Because two of the screws came out but the third broke off. It took me a lot of soaking, prying and twisting to finally get it off. Then once the housing was off the bolt came out pretty easy. Good luck! But yeah other than that as others have said it's all very straight forward. Careful with the shift linkage connector. Fine threads in brass.

Cheers.................Todd
