I just bought a 1957 montgomery ward sea king 5 hp outboard it is in realy good shape i bought it from the original owner who says it was running last time he used it (20+ years ago) it has good compresion with very low hours on it when i started to work on it i noticed the fuel system was very gummed up except for the gas tank which is like new so i just cleaned the carb by soaking it in a carb cleaner can put it back on and it will only run when i spray engine starting fluid in the air intake and then it dies it doesnt seem to be getting gas through the carb
The book say the motor is a 1957 wards sea king 5 hp deluxe model gg-8960a

You are wasting your time unless you have checked the coils. ALL 1957 OMC motors have bad coils unless they have already been replaced. Remove the recoil starter, then the thin cover on the flywheel. Now take a looksee thru the inspection holes. Betcha they are cracked. New ones are available right here at iboats.

It is getting spark though it will run off engine starting fluid but it is not getting any gas from the tank

Soaking a gummed up carb is deadly unless you actually clear all passages and orifices. The orifices in the bottom of the throat at and near the venturi are the most often clogged.

Gee these carbs are no mystery From 5 to 40 horse pretty basic.
What is the difficulty?Been 40 years since I took one apart.
You may have to remove the needle valves to get the bowl off but I'm just guessing.

What did I just tell you??? Look to see if the coils are cracked before you spend time and money. "Getting spark" doesn't impress me one bit. It will get spark with cracked coils, but it won't run reliably.

I have the same year and size motor that I bought 3 years ago. Mine is like new and the paint is all original and it also sat in a boat house for many years. The first thing I did is replace the coils and it runs like new. I was told that the motor was made by OMC and is the same as the Johnson. So you can buy parts for a Johnson and they will fit. Good Luck
