Hi Aldon
First we need the model #. I should be RD19 or RD19C. Anyway you have a 1957-58 model. I'll try to sort out the rest of your questions. As you note, the original fuel system was a presurized system. there was no fuel pump mounted to the engine. Over the years some of these were converted to the more modern pump system. I suspect what you see is a glass bowl with hoses attached. This will be the fuel strainer. There my also be a vacuume over rev limit switch with a vacuume hose and wires attached. Your starter motor may be missing. The box in the boat contains the starter seleniod. I suggest that you aquire a manual for proper service and operation.

Hi Aldon
Yep, we're talkin 1957. Manuals are available here at the bottom of the page. You may also find a copy at the library, napa auto, marine store or outboard dealer. It doesn't matter which manual you get as they all say about the same thing. Some folks have a hard time understanding one over another. Not to worry thats why we have this board. If there is something that has you hung-up just ask. Someone is allways glad to help.

Your engine does not require a battery to either start or run. It can be started with the rope puller above the flywheel.

The engine runs on electricity created by magneto, which is the magnetic force of the flywheel passing the coils. Just like a basic lawnmower.

The battery powered electric starter is a nice-to-have add-on, but isn't necessary to use the engine.

Thanks Lark 40 Thanks for your input. And I know if i were to put a starter on it, That it would also take some kind of charging system, There is one wire that has a cover sleve over it, proubably size 12 or 14 guage any ideas? I would like to put running lights on my thirteen and a half foot velco boat so I know that I'm going to have to come up with something. Thanks again. Aldon

As for the wire, where does it connect?

I don't have a generator for my engine's electric starter, and neither do many other owners. Just home-charge the battery every few outings. If you have lights, use a second battery.

The old generators are expensive and low-tech; you probably don't want one.

I found a complete kit for mine $400.00, I bought a charger at a yard sale for $5.00 and a second battery for about $50.00. That leaves $345.00 to go fishin......

Richard
