Looking at a 1958 18hp Evinrude with electric start and tank with hoses. He said it does run well and was asking $200. Called him the other day and he said lower unit needed a bearing and would take $80 for the motor. Is the lower unit hard / expensive to rebuild? Is it worth $80? Thanks

It isn't hard, but possibly could be expensive. We don't know what is wrong with it, so can't give a decent answer. Fortunately, used lower units can be found.

Yeah worst case scenario you bolt up another gearcase. Still many around, post a wanted ad at aomci.org. I would buy it for 80 bucks all day long, especially if it has the wiring harness. They are getting hard to find.
