Great in a straight line...ha hah. But the motor woun't move from left to right. Stuck. I applied penitraiting grease ,Blast, to all involved screws, nuts, bolts and recievers for a few days still won't budge.

Could anyone give me a tip for freeing it up?

Much Thanks

Did you loosen the bolt/screw that clamps the pivot down tight? Look up under the front of the motor, a long flathead screwdriver is needed.

I take it that you applied the grease to the grease fitting on that motor, mine (a new old motor I just picked up) was a little on the stiff side till I greased that fitting and worked it back and forth with the steering wheel.

I wish there was one on the up & down movement, I think I need to loosen that bolt some!

I doubt if I'll ever be able to get that thing up if I run into low water!

Thanks for the input guys.

Johesg- I'll do that. I have to grab a manual today, but I was wondering, does it pivot on brass bushings, or is there an internal ball baring system that could be corroded or siesed?

Tmcalavy- I did remove a screw about 1 1/2 - 2" long (+/-). on the port side of the motor and sprayed penetrating oil into the opening (few times yesterday and today). Is this port side screw the one, or is there another?

John- The grease fittings are filled/covered with fresh (not yet dusty) grease. Probably the seller trying to free it up before selling.

58CorrySuburban, grease on the outside of that fitting don't mean nutin, if there is grease coming out above that on the bracket then it is greased! if not, those fittings get clogged, take a paper clip an poke in the hole then grease it!

If all else fails while you have it apart seperate lower mount housing especiallly if there is any corrision visible or soak the heck out of it with penetrating oil.

I just went down to the lower 40 and looked at my 30 hp which is basically the same thing, just replace it with a 35, mine even has some up and down play in it so it surely shouldn't be froze up lest it be corroded!

I had a frozen pivot like that, once. I couldn't get any grease into the fitting at all. So, I unscrewed the fitting, then took a drill bit slightly smaller than the opening and MANUALLY screwed it into the old hardened grease until it hit metal. When I pulled it out, I had a hole that went clear in to the shaft.

At that point, I started squirting Stoddard Solvent (pPaint thinner will work) into that hole with a trigger-type oil can, while trying to turn the outboard from side to side. After just a couple of minutes, it freed up, so I kept pumping the Stoddard Solvent in there until it was running out at the bottom of the shaft. I wiggled that powerhead back and forth and shook the heck out of it.

Finally, I put the grease fitting on my grease gun and pumped some grease through it. If that hadn't worked, I would have bought a new grease fitting. Then I screwed the fitting back into the engine and pumped away. Very quickly, grease started coming out on both ends of the shaft and the outboard turned freely. I kept greasing it once a week or so, watching the nasty black grease slowly change to nice blue marine grease. At that point, I was done, and everything was normal again.

It'll come free. It just take some work and time, and lots of stuff to dissolve the old brick-like grease. Keep at it.

58corry, if you think you are going to free that thing up with penetrating oil and grease, or even heat, I have a bridge for sale. I can tell you how to fix it, but it ain't easy. I've done a few (hundred).
