Hi, I have a 1958 7.5 evinrude. I dont think that the water pump is working. First off let me make sure that I have this right the water gets sucked through the hole just above the propeller, and comes out the only other hole that is midway up starting at the bottom end. If I have that right, the water pump is in the lower portion correct??

the water pump is in the lower section. Those motor need to be run a bit deep for them to pump right. The water pump is just above where the lower unit bolts to the leg.

No. That is the exhaust relief outlet. Some water, mixed with exhaust will exit there. Most of the water however, exits near the prop, under water, along with most of the exhaust.

The relief hole is there to let exaust out when idling the engine. If it were not there, excess backpressure would probably stall the engine.

If there's some water, mixed with exhaust coming out of that hole at mid-leg, water is being pumped by the impeller.

If all the exhaust and water went out that hole, it'd be terribly loud.

through the little plate on the side of the foot I believe. Here is a flushing adapter I built for my 5.5hp 59 Johnson.

Yes. The square plate. The picture of my motor's foot shows the flushing adapter I built to put in place of the regular plate, the plate that goes there should have 4 holes that have scoops on them to scoop the water up.

Re: 1958 7.5 evinrude water pump???

Thank you Freddyray. Mine is just a simple piece of aluminum with a brass fitting in it that I clamp a water hose to. I used the plate off of the foot as a template for the bolt holes. I drilled the hole for the brass fitting just so the fitting will screw right on to the aluminum plate, there is no nut on the back side holding it on. So far it works great, it might leak a little but that water has to go somewhere.

Of course you can add your own touch to it. Otherwise it is patent pending lol, just joking.
