Looking for tips and tricks to split the case to remove the crank.
Got all the bolts removed, outer fillister head bolts and two allen head socket bolts (in center circle).

How "hard" can I lean on this thing?
thanks

There are 2 tapered dowels that must be removed.-Remove them by driving to the carburetor end.

Yep, pop those two pins out. There are two Allen-head bolts visible in the photo at the center main. Have those been removed?

Yeah, easy to see those tapered dowels in the picture. I also see the allen bolts where you removed the reed plate, but you said you removed them (??) Once you have all those out, and are sure you didn't miss anything, a couple of taps with a rubber hammer on the crankshaft (toward the carburetor end) should separate the case. It should not be tightly stuck.

It came apart easily. Thanks for the help.
Now that I have it apart, I was kinda hoping that there would be an easily seen problem but it looks like I think it should look. Not even sure what I should be taking pics of.

Cyl walls look great. Rings unbroken, small bit of "give." in the connecting rod at the piston side that I tried to capture on video.
Will post link when I get it online.

What is the maximum side to side play for connecting rod off the crankshaft?
COuld this be my banging sound?
I hoped there was a loose bolt that I could see but they were all tight with safety tabs intact.

Sounds kinda like the recoil? Maybe the armature plate rattling against the flywheel? Doesn't sound internal.

+1. Try pulling out the starter handle a couple inches when operating, and see if you can "catch" the rattle. maybe one of the pawls.
