Ok, this bad boy won't start. This is what I have done so far:

Replaced all fuel lines(including tank lines)
replaced coils, condensers, points
cleaned out the carb
replaced the spark plug wires
Replaced plugs too
has fresh 87 octane gas with the appropiate oil mixture(24:1 I believe)

I am getting fuel into the carb bowl but still isn't starting.

Yesterday I was able to get it to run for about 2 seconds then it died. I was able to try it again and it worked again, now it won't start at all.

I don't want to keep pulling the rope of fear my arm will fly off.

Any suggestions, prayers or lucky horseshoes you can give me?

Try spraying some gas into the carb with a spray bottle. If it runs that way make sure gas is getting to the carb.. if it is make sure you put it back together right ;) Let me know what happens

so what does that indicate when you spray gas into the carb and it still doesn't fire?

Check the plugs. Are they wet?Have you checked For Spark? Has it ever started and run normally?
How is the Compression?
Are the points set at .020 and do they actually
close.Point gap sets the timing.Need to know if carb and ignition are syncronized.
Are you working from a manual?
Its fairly simple,If the motor is sound it needs gas and spark to run.If it doesnt run one is missing.Too little gas it wont run,too much gas and it wont run.No spark no run. spark too early no good spark too late no good.

Re: 1958 Evinrude 18hp starting problems

the good news is that I was a ASE certified mechanic, but never was any good at 2-cycle which is just half the 4-cyl, but twice the power.

The bad news is that I have not worked on a motor in 5 years, so I am a bit rusty.

After I cleaned out the carb again and made sure all the valves and such are cleaned and free of debris, I re-checked the spark(even though the whole iginition system is brand spanking new), got a **** of a spark from a half effort pull.

Then I primed the fuel tank to pressurize the fuel system and tried it again, BAAM it started and ran. Then I noticed fuel was leaking at the connector where the fuel line meets the motor.

I took a closer look and looks like the O-ring is all chewed up. That's probably why it isn't getting fuel.

Now I have to go find a 20 cent O-ring, and I am sure it is a special size and not a common one.
