After many hours of work (newbie) but not a whole lot of money, my big twin was running well. Then, long story short....the flywheel nicked the coil wire and causing it to run on one cylinder. I replaced the coil and torqued the flywheel again to 105. It appears to have dropped too low, hit the coils and broke the camshaft cam. Any thoughts?

Camshaft Cam?
Start at the Beginning. What all have you done to this motor?

He means the cam for the breaker point I think.----Are you sure that it calls for 105 FT-LBS on that model.-----I think you need to check and check that value again !!

My book says 60 - 65 lb ft for the Flywheel. Time for a new Flywheel

As for the Cam, I was sure he meant that, but when I saw Camshaft...

jimmbo,
I think you've got it. I screwed up.

"Re: 1958 johnson 35 hp flywheel torque

From reading my Evinrude service manual...60-65 foot pounds for the '58. Might want to cross check because '59 models went to 100-105 foot pounds...a big difference."

So are you sure the flywheel is toast?

Clymer's, I see my mistake. I read one line too high.

By Over Torqueing the Nut, it pushed the Flywheel further down the Taper on the Crankshaft. That would stretch the metal, and from then on the Flywheel would be a little Lower than it is supposed to be. You already say it has hit things below it that it should have cleared.
My Book doesn't show the 100 - 105 spec until 1960, when the slightly larger 40hp came out.

We had a 57 35hp, and later we had a 63 40hp. In 74, the 40hp was tuned up at a Dealer. I took it out the first time in 74 and 10 minutes later, at WOT, the Flywheel came loose. Fortunately the Recoil Starter above it prevented it from coming completely off. The Mechanic didn't torque the nut properly, or put it on, went for lunch and forgot to finish the job properly. I guess my Dad had a very one-sided conversation at the Dealership, where they were doing all the Listening

You might want to install a new flywheel nut.-----A good used flywheel should be easy to find I think.

Thanks for all the help. I'll look for another fly wheel and nut.
Well, I got another flywheel and breaker cam. Torqued it to 65 lbs and the breaker cam cracked again. I did note the cam did not want to slide down far enough on the crank by just slipping it on. It did not go down all the way until the flywheel nut was tightened.
The crank shaft taper and key show no damage. I ordered another breaker cam and I am going to lap the taper this time.
Any other ideas? Could I file a little off the top of breaker cam giving me a little more room?
I built the whole boat around the looks of this motor but I'm about to give up on it.
Thanks

I think so. The key that came with the replacement flywheel is the same as the old one. Installed curved side in.
How about doing a Nova 2 conversion? Could you then eliminate the breaker cam?
