Rebuilding a 1958 Evinrude SporTwin 10 hp 10016.

The lower gear case is disassembled and the gear head case (Part number 277812) while moving is not coming off the prop shaft restricted by the area where the drive pin is. I already have the replacement seal (part number 303345) in hand but am reluctant to force the gear head case off because I'm not sure if I have the proper tools to knock out the seal without damaging the gear head case.

I have watched some YouTube videos (OldJohnnyRude) where the original gear head case was left on. I've watched other YouTube videos where the seal was removed and it looks a bit difficult. I know that after the unit is put back together I can pressure test the gear case and if leaking at the gear head case I will have to go down that road of replacing the seal, but is there a way to tell if the original seal is still good while its on the shaft. Pretty sure its the original due to the blue paint which is still on it.

Photo of the prop shaft with gears is attached.

Thank you.

It is bulged around the hole for the pin.-----Simply file the bumps around the hole and bearing head will slide off.------Use a dremel ( carefully ) to weaken the seal and it may fall out.

Thanks for your help.

I filed down the rough edges of the hole for the pin and the bearing came off without too much effort.

Regarding the gear case, I removed/cut away the rubber seal which exposed the brass and using a screwdriver with a blade (I bent over slightly) was able to punch it out, again without too much effort.
