I have tried and tried and tried again to solve this problem of water mixing with the oil in the lower unit. Why oh why does it keep happening? I have sealed eveything up and then sealed over it all with silicone, but to no avail! It has new seals in it. It has fresh clean oilin it. I have taken it apart and cleaned it out very well. Still gets water mixed in with the oil. HELP! Is it always going to be like this? (Sportwin 1958 10hp)

You said the magic word..silicone. That is a NO NO when assembling a gearcase. Silicone breaks down and become jelly like.

Remove the silicone from the gearcase and it should seal up fine.

A good sealing product to use is Type M Adhesive.

TMD

Hello.
I had the same problem with two of my '57s,And could never find any water even after letting it sit for 3 days.
It turns out that sierra lower unit oil in these lower units tends to pick up a little air and it gets suspended in the oil for a long time.It makes it look almost like it has water, but it is still brownish and not creamy towards white.
If you have a chance to pressure check your unit in a barrel of water you definitely should(10 lbs is fine)If you do check it, look in the barrel to see where the air, if any, comes from and take it from there.
good luck.

BlueBoat....TMD is correct. There is not place on an outboard for silicon.

After removing the stuff, Drain the lube and rig a way to get some air pressure in the lower unit. Just 5psi or so. Then dump the sucker in a can of water. Look for bubbles. That will tell ya' where the water is coming from. Being a spit gearcase, I'd bet it will come from somewhere around where the halves meet or toward the prop shaft. Be sure you get the whole gear case submerged.
