So I have a 1958 sport lido with a force 35 on it and sometimes I just feel like it needs more power. My mom has always said that back in 86 when they put a new engine on she wanted to put a 50 hp engine on but the guys said the hull couldn't handle the power (or that's just how my mom interpreted it). Can't the transom just be reinforced and it would take the extra power fine? Now is what the guy said bs or is there a way to put a 50 hp engine on without it being too expensive? Thanks guys.

That boat should easily be rated for at least 50 horses. No reinforcement necessary if the existing transom is in good condition.

Is there anyway to find out on the boat if it could handle that?

A nice modern 40 Evinrude or Johnson might surprise you compared to the Force 35.
Those after 85 are rated at the prop and the Force never was. And the 35 wasn't known for its speed or power.

Could the boat handle that though? Was the max power the boat could handle rated at the crank or the prop?

I wouldn't worry about it. A 40 will be fine. Check to make sure your transom isn't rotted.
