I have a 1958 Johnson Seahorse 10HP model QD-19. It has been sitting for 15 years and I am trying to get it going again. I have replaced the water pump and the gear oil. I have inspected the coils through the peep hole on the flywheel and I have spark when i turn the flywheel by hand because I can see blue spark coming from the sparkplugs. I got it started about a week ago and ran it for about 1 minute but it died because the high speed and low speed nozzles moved while it idled (I literally had to hold them in place) and it leaked fuel from the female connection from the pressurized gas tank line. I did have plenty of water spitting out of the back, so it pumps water good.

I baught the carb rebuild kit from iboats along with a new float. When i rebuilt the carb, the old float needle, old float and all the old packing was shot. Now with the carb rebuilt, it starts to sputter (turn over) when I pull the rope, but dies right after I let go of the rope. Any thoughts? I also noticed that once I gave up trying to start it, the gas tank did not "hiss" after I opened the cap to depressurize it. Could i not be recieving any fuel? The bowl in the carb fills with fuel when i prime the bulb on the pressurized gas tank. I would appreciate any help, I can feel I am close.

Where do you have the needles set? High speed should be 3/4 to 1 turn out and low speed 1.5 turns out for starters. Did you remove the welch plug on top of the carb and clean the idle circuit? If you can get it to fire, try pumping the primer on the tank and see if it keeps running, or lift the tank higher than the motor and see what happens.

I set both of my needles, but I have my high speed 1.5 turns out and my low speed about one turn out. I have also tried almost every setting between rich and lean to start it, but it always just dies. If the little aluminum piece, about the size of a dime, is what you refer to as the welch plug and the idle circuit, then yes I did remove it, cleaned the area behind it and replaced it with the new plug. I will try raising the gas tank above the motor and then repost. I don't have enough time to prime the bulb, it dies as I release the pull rope.

Ok, so I got it running last night. I had to start it with the throttle handle almost to 3/4 speed but it started right up. I left the gas tank on the ground and it pumps gas no problem. However, the bad news is that when I try to turn the throttle handle to slow, it shuts down. I can turn the handle about 1/4 turn towards slow but after that it dies. It also smokes a lot, and I mean a lot, it also it spitting out lots of oil from the exhaust into my test tank.

The fast/start/slow/shift emblem on my throttle handle is loose and moved around, so I am not completely sure where each of the markings should be. Do you have any ideas what may be wrong? Thanks

The markings on the handle are pretty arbitrary - in neutral, just turn the twist grip counterclockwise until it hits the stop. That is the "start" position. You may need to do a link and sync on the motor. The cam follower (roller) rides on the cam to open the throttle, and the cam is adjustable. Two bolts at either end secure it. There is a mark scribed on the cam. When the roller hits the mark, the throttle plate should just start to open. When the the throttle is advanced all the way, the throttle plate should be fully open. Loosen the bolts that secure the cam and adjust the cam to make it so. Then tighten the bolts back up.
