Hello. I have a few questions about my lower unit and gear case group. First, my driveshaft takes a pin and not a key,but the impeller looks like it was made to accept a key ? Also, is the seal below the impeller / plate ( that accepts the driveshaft ) supposed to turn or does the driveshaft just turn inside the seal ? Any recommendations on a specific grease to use ? And last, is there supposed to be some sort of gasket or seal between the gear case unit and the lower unit ? Thanks in advance. ( I tried posting this yesterday, don't believe it went through ).

Impeller is driven by a special pin/key IF it has a plastic hub. If it has a bronze hub, it doesn't matter and a standard pin will do, or you can continue to use the special one.

Seal does not rotate, shaft spins inside it.

It is supposed to use regular 80-90 wt outboard gear oil. Available almost everywhere.

Metal to metal fit between gearcase and exhaust housing. No gasket or sealer needed. Anything that leaks out of there was destined to go out the underwater exhaust anyway.

Ok thank you. I do have another question. I've removed the gear case unit from the lower unit, including the shaft. Looking up inside towards the powerhead I notice some sand and oil ( I'm assuming its sand; I also had the same sand and oil in the impeller housing which is not magnetic ). I'd like to a closer look up in there. My question is : How do I seperate the lower unit from the powerhead. Is it just the 5 screws and then separate the two ? The shaft is out, but the water tube is still in place. Anything tricky to this or is it pretty straight forward ? Thank you.

Leave it alone unless you have a lot better reason to go exploring. Oil is normal (hey remember the stuff you put in the gas? Where do you think it went)? Sand?? Well not normal, but it should wash out as soon as you run it. Unless the cooling system is plugged up with it, but that's a different story.
