Hello. This is my first post. I recently bought a 1958 johnson 3 hp jw-14 and have a few questions. Some of these questions have been answered, but seem to vary somewhat. Fuel to oil ratio. I purchased penzzoil marine tc-w3 two stroke oil and decided to mix it at 32: 1 . It started right up and ran excellent , with no smoke. 50: 1 seems a little to lean to me . Am I ok at 32: 1 or should I be adding more oil such as 24:1 ? Also, what's good to use for the lower unit gear oil ? Any suggestions on spark plugs ? I believe the original ones are discontinued and there are many to choose from. And last question, what's a good boat to use with this motor ? ( yes, I bought the motor first without owning a boat ) I know it wont pull much, but was just wondering what everybody else used. Thanks again.

I believe that motor is old enough to require 16 to 1 mix.
F R will let You know whats going on .
As far as what boat to use, I regularly use My 1957 JW13 or 1960 JW16 on
a 16' jon boat at a no wake lake I take my daughters fishing at.
It pushes it just fine for a nice easy day of fishing.
And it uses very little gas!

HI. Welcome to the forum. There's good help here.
Nice little engine you have there.
The 32:1 is okay as a fuel mix. Running slightly rich won't hurt it. Some will recommend 25:1 for the older stuff, but I think the 32:1 is good. It also runs most chain saws and weed whackers, so it's convenient. You may have to adjust the fuel mixture screws a little.
Spark plugs should be Champion J6C. They are available. Don't spend on sexy, Japanese racing plugs. You'll be wasting your money. The engine was designed with Champions in mind.
A good boat would be something like a 10-12-foot rowboat or jon boat.
Good luck!

I've used my 3 Evinrude on a 12 foot aluminum v bottom. You won't go fast but if you're not looking for speed they're a good combination.

That motor is supposed to run 16:1 mix. Having said that, I know there are lots of people that have their own thoughts and opinions. I'm not going to add mine.

It was designed as a fishing motor, pure and simple. The weedless drive is designed to get in where the fish are lurking. It does very good at what it was made for, and that certainly wasn't speed. It will push any boat that you hang it on, as long as the shaft length and transom height are a match.
