I pulled a starter from a '58 35hp Lark and put it on my '62 28hp johnson, so I would assume the reverse would work. Same starter bracket as well. I would look for early 60s 28 and 33hp motors.

Your motor is in the group of all 30-40HP motors built by OMC from 1956-1964. The starter may be common to many other models as noted above. I do not have a factory parts catalog for your motor but can send you a free copy of a non-factory service manual if you will send me your email address in a Private Message. Good luck!

1956 was a 6 volt, so you don't want that. However, all 35 and 40hp motors from 1957 clear up into the early 1970's take similar starters. The newer ones are longer and more powerful than the 1958. Try to find a longer one. It will have an aluminum end cap on the bottom. One precaution--the longer ones have a support bracket on the botttom. Don't try using a long starter without a support bracket.

The 28 and 33hp motors use the same starters as the 35-40.
