1958 magneto installation and wiring questions

I just ordered a magneto for my 1958 evinrude 50 hp V4 outboard motor.
I have read over my manual like 10 times to try and figure out where to hook the two wires from the magneto too. I am assuming one is a hot and one is ground but there is no place to run my hot wire into the distributor cap. (a bolt runs through the only hole in the manual pics) I thought all my questions would be answered in the manual but im afraid that is not the case

From the diagram that is in the manual I know one of the wires goes to a bolt that comes out of the metal casing but which one, and where does the other wire hook up to.

Also I got the part now I realize that I am missing a few things to install it. And I am wondering how to find parts or at least a way to find out where to get the parts.

The parts I am looking for are called: (according to my manual)

Insulator plates for the magneto. (optional I believe)

gasket for distributor cap.

Coil retaining clips (to hold magneto in place)

Carbon contact (secondary) to distributor arm- spring loaded.

Can I find these individual parts or should I just order a new distributor cap. would these parts even come with a new cap.

Also I just re-wired the entire boat. I am pretty sure I am missing a few things. first is the safety switch that prevents the motor from starting while in gear. How important is this? or can I just ground this wire to bypass this switch? This saftey switch has been completely removed.

secondly I can't find the choke solenoid anywhere. I am pretty sure its missing? I have an extra wire hanging out waiting to be hook up to the choke solenoid. Can I just cap this wire and manually switch my choke while starting?
I know there is a lot of question here if you know any answers to the above questions I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Re: 1958 magneto installation and wiring questions

When you say "magneto", you really mean "coil", don't you? The magneto is the whole thing.

Insulators are part number 510538
gasket is 510334
clips are 510325
carbon brush with spring kit is 580291

First place to look is your local Evinrude dealer. Or www.sea-way.com

Yes you can manually choke it.

EDIT: The bare wire is grounded under the coil retainer clip screw. The insulated one goes under the head of the screw that goes through the side of the case. You have the insulator washers for that screw?

The coil insulators aren't really "optional". The coils have a bad habit of arcing through to the case without them.

Thank you so much you have been very helpful.

you asked: "You have the insulator washers for that screw?"

because I don't know what the insulator washer is I am going to assume that I don't have it. lol. Is this something that I need to have or get? If so do you have the part # for these. and where do they belong.

I can't tell you how helpful you have been. saved me tons of hours or frustration. thanks again

A PM is a private message. Sounds like FR is trying to help.

As you probably know by now, a magneto has no voltage going to it from the battery. One side of the coil is grounded to the coil mounting screw. The other side of the coil is connected to the screw thru the distributor case. The insulators keep the coil wire from shorting out. On the outside of the distributor housing the points and killer wire connect to the coil wire.
