We have a 1958 mark 28 that some one basically gave is for helping move - he had it in his basement. Its clean but hadn't run in years.
We have 4 other old mercs, but this one is giving us fits.
The compression is great (120 in both after about 4 pulls) and the motor and and tiller handle and all look real clean.
BUT - Even after replacing the coils, points, and spark plugs, and re-setting the points 3 or 4 times, there is simply no spark from either plug wire.
A few observations:
(1) the old coils were very rubbery and soft but were still basically intact - we have put in after market coils that are hard plastic and they seem to fit ok except in order to get them to touch the post or plate on the outside of the [stator plate?] (the round thing under the fywheel on which all the electrical stuff sits, we needed to grind down the base of the coil about an eight of an inch - it didn't seem to pentrate the insulation - and we still can't 100% get rid fo the tiny gap between the middle section of the laminated core/stator and that post on the base plate- I understand maybe that they need to touch? - and could this tiny gap be an issue?
(2) the magnets in the flywhell are very strong and clean.
(3) However, the laminated core (the metal plates which go inside and around the coils and under the flywheel) have only a very slight magnetic charge right now - are they supposed to be magntized also? If so, could it be that they some how need to be re-magnetized?
(4) could some kill swith which we are not aware of be preventing spark?
Thanks for any ideas on this frustrating issue.
