Does anybody know what color the original coils were. Mine are red. They are spotless and showing 6.7 ohms. Guess they will be ok, huh?

If they aren't cracked or "sweaty" looking, they are probably ok. 6.7 ohms sounds funny though. You haven't got your meter on the X1K range, do you? 6700 ohms sounds more like it on the secondary winding.

Sounds good. Do you know if they are original or not?

Well, no not really. OMC did use red coils back in the 1950's but it is highly unlikely that you have any of those that are not cracked. They were among the worst for that. My guess is that you have some kind of aftermarket coils, age unkown.

If your coils are cracked, like in F_R's pic, then they are likely original.:D:D:D

If they're red and look great, then likely not.

Ok thanks. The little motor is so clean, it looks like its hardly ever been used and been sitting in a basement.

Can someone tell me if the lower unit seal plate, the one right under the impeller wear plate, is just stuck on there due too the gasket underneath it. Looks like to me the water pump housing is what would hold it on. Figured I would throw a new seal in it while I have the LU dropped.

Yep, just the gasket. But sometimes a little bit of corrosion sets in too. As you guessed, it is held in place by the water pump. It is real thin, so don't break it, because it is $$$$.

So what would be the best way to get it off, gently? Don't want to nick the mating surface with a screwdriver. Would a little heat help?

a small screwdriver should do the trick, just be gentle with it. They aren't really fragile if you are careful.
