I just got a pretty sweet deal on a 59 10hp evinrude. $50, including a tank and fuel line. Everything looks to be in pretty good shape and he said it was serviced and ran well last year.

I've been looking for info on the motor on line and have had no luck. The fuel tank is plastic and single line, but i heard anything before 1960 was a dual line pressure tank? i could not find the tag with the model number so I'm questioning if it's a 59?

I currently have/use a 1959 5.5hp johnson and it uses a pressure tank. the two motors are identical below the power head so if the 10hp is not a 1959, it's close.

Also, I'm guessing fuel/oil mixture is 25-1, same as my 5.5? Anyone know for sure?

I didn't really want another older motor, but this deal was too good to pass up.

The mixture would be the same as your 5.5hp engine.

There should be a plate on the port transom bracket with the model number. Also, possibly a core plug on the powerhead might have the model and serial number imprinted. If there, what is the model number?

The lower units are similar, but not the same. They use the same outer casting, but it is machined differently to take a beefier driveshaft. However, the gears are only marginally beefier and they are the weak link in the motor. The unit started life with the 5.5 and 7.5, and the earlier 10s used the 15/18 unit. In a cost-cutting/weight cuting measure, they tried to use the smaller unit on the 10. Works alright, but you have to keep good oil in it. Check frequently and if you get signs of water in the oil, take the time to reseal the unit properly so that it'll last...

1959 was the Golden Anniversary year and had the gold medallion or decal on the rear of the fiberglass cover. 1960 had the same shape fiberglass cover, different decals. Those were the only two years for that cover shape. You can see pictures at http://www.old-omc.de/
A fuel pump kit was an optional accessory for the 10hp, a long forgotten fact.

I was going to mention that as well.

$50 is a great deal. 24:1 fuel mix.

You guys are awesome!

The ID plate on the transom mount is gone, but the numbers are on the freeze plug: model 10020 SN 18046

Any idea what's the difference between this and the 10021?

So it is a 1960. And to confirm it, the cowling has the emblem on the sides and not the front.

Thanks!

I just wanted to tell you that your 10 hp is no good at all. In fact, to help you avoid all the trouble it will give you, you should ship it to me for proper disposal. Just PM me for my address. :D

Model numbers 10020 and 10021 are both 1960 10hp Evinrudes.
