I'm restoring a 1959 12' Starcraft Speedster. This is my first boat project, so I'm learning as I go. I need to build a new transom, and I want to make sure I'm taking the right approach. Since the sides of the hull are tapered inward at the top and the knee braces hold it tight in front, it's impossible to remove (or insert) the transom without a cut. I figure that they must have installed the transom before riveting the knees at the factory. Since I am not confident in my riveting skills, I want to ask if anyone has any clever solutions for the novice? The best I've been able to come up with is to cut separate pieces for the tapers at either end (see attached drawings). Thank you!

Welcome Authaus, Looks like you have yourself a real nice old Starcraft there. By the looks of your drawing you have it pretty much fiqured out. Just make sure you seal the wood up real good with epoxy or polyurethane.

Welcome Authaus!

That's a sweet little runabout you have there! Man she'll be fun!

You have yourself a tricky transom there, and in my opinion, you have a super plan to rebuild it.

Excellent drawings too!:D

I am also restoring the same boat, wondering what material you used for the new transom?

Thanks,

Evan

Please start your own thread Evan, authaus has not been back to the forum in months.

Marine grade plywood is best. Quality exterior grade plywood is also good. Seal with fiberglass and resin or epoxy resin alone. (epoxy will need to be painted to protect it from UV).
