I am new to working on boat motors but am very knowledgeable about cars. I have a 59 40hp Elgin and have no spark, i was wondering how to troubleshoot this. I see that the coil is under the "flywheel" but do I need a puller to remove this part. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Nick

Well i got the flywheel off and I cleaned the points, but how do i go about testing the coils and other components to see if they are the problem?

Thanks Nick

To do a real test on the coils requires an expensive tester. About all you can do otherwise is visual (cracks, melted, etc) and a continuity test. The primary winding should be around an ohm and the secondary a few k-ohms.

Some electric start 40s had battery ignition with a under the flywheel alternator generator.w points and condenser.
If a magneto ign. there will be just the coils, points condensers and magnets in the flywheel.
