I just got a 1959 Glastron with a 50hp Evinrude on it. V4. I am new to outboards. The engine model # is 50518, the serial # 05674. Is this a 1959 engine? Is this engine 2stroke or 4stroke?
If it's 2stroke I need an oil/gas mixture?
If it's 4 stoke do I need to add oil seperately?
Do I need any other lube (ie. drive lubricant?)
I also want to see if it runs, can I do this out of water using the hose attachment? on the side or do I need to put it in water?

sleepingbag

It is a 1959 Model Evinrude 2-Stroke 50 HP. Mix oil in the fuel tank at a ratio of 24:1. 1 quart TCW-3 outboard oil to 6 Gal gas. The lower unit has lube that needs to be changed and checked. There is a drain/fill and vent screw on the bottom of the lower unit. Remove the vent screw and then the drain screw. Let it drain and check the condition of the lubricant. If milky looking, seals on the screws are bad or others seals are leaking letting water into the oil. It's always a good idea to replace the seals on the screws when you change the lube. Check the Manual for the type lube you should use in that old motor. Type "C", I believe. You can run it on muffs in the driveway if the water pickups on the lower unit allow. If they are on the sides, then it will work fine. A large tub to submerge the lower unit in, is always an option, too. I'm sure as you go you will have more questions about that old gem of a motor. A manual will give you most of the info you need for maintenence. You can get a factory manual at the link below or at the bottom of this page.

More info and pics

Factory Manual

sleepingbag
It is 1959, 2 stroke, oil 50:1, the owners manual say to lub the linkages with 90w gear grease, I have used the muffs on mine (1958) but I do not run it long that way. If it has been more than 2 years since it has had a impeller, change it before hitting the lake, about $25 to do yourself, change the oil in the lower unit, new gaskits on the oil plugs, points .020 plugs .030.
Richard

Re: 1959? 50hp V4 Model#50518 2stroke or 4stroke?

I am going to order the repair book for 1959, I had a book that went from 1958 to like 78 or some thing.
I am not sure what an impeller is (changing the drive oil?) but the motor hasn't been run for at least 10 years or longer. Everthing still pivots(no rust or corrosion.) and the hoses and spark plug wires are in good condition. I am going to change the spark plugs though.
Is the muffs the hose attachement on the side that I was talking about?
Also I need to put the generator back in but the belt that drives it is worn. The other one is in good condition.
Does anyone know what belt goes to the generator?
It has no numbers on it or anything.
Thanks.

sleepingbag

The Impeller is the water pump. You Must remove the lower unit(Leg) of the motor to replace it. Manual will detail it and there's always help from here if you get stuck. Do this before running it or bad things will happen. Muffs are what you're thinking. You would slip the muffs on the water intakes on the lower unit, connect to the hose and turn on the water to cool the engine while testing. Not sure about the belt. Other will know. Best to wait for the Manual before you go any further. Lot of info in there to get you going.
