So, I bought a 1959 (Model 50519) 50hp, V-4 for a project to rebuild/restore/spruce up, whatever. It's in pretty good shape, aside from being very sun faded and rough looking on the outside. So far I only see two things that might be a bear to find, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
First, the electrical connection is a rectangular plug on the starboard side. It's got 6 small pins (4 on the aft end and two on the fwd end of the cavity) and one large pin (near the two small ones in the fwd part of the cavity) and a large bolt hole at the aft end of the cavity. The plug cavity is probably about 1" x 2". Anyone know where to find the boat side of this connector? It's not a "red plug" as some folks had suggested.
Second, I noticed a nice, empty mount on the port side. Just about opposite of the starter. I was wondering what it could be for, then realized, duh!! No alternator under the flywheel... 1950s... it must be the generator mount. Looks like the generator may have been driven off the flywheel? I've seen some other posts that folks mentioned generators being belt driven, but to be honest, I just presumed it was flywheel driven and didn't look closer. So, I'll have to look, maybe it's belt driven. Anyway, any leads on where to get one? Thanks a bunch. I'll try to post a "before" pic soon.

you will probably have to wire direct, scrap the receptacle. the harness when to a junction box inside the transom, with the starter solenoid, and regulator. yes, you are correct about the generator. this one only has the starter solenoid.

Generator was belt driven and good luck trying to find one. If you can find one it will probably be expensive. You will also need the regulator for it. Better to just charge the battery periodically.

As far as the generator, I wondered if that wouldn't be the case. But, no big deal. If I can't find one, I'll just keep a solar charger on the battery and since it's a project motor I'll probably use it as trade up material.
I kind of thought the plug might be hard to find, too. I've got a source here in town, possibly. But, if that doesn't pan out either, I can probably make a reasonable substitute out of Epoxy. Definitely going to be a learning experience!

Wite, The bolt that holds the quick disconnect plug also serves as the ground connection for the starter as well as the rest of the motor.

Those motors had an external junction box that connected to the wiring harness. This "electric starting" box had some connections for the wiring to the dashboard ign switch as well as the starter solenoid and the mechanical voltage regulator. You can make one out of a piece of plywood or heavy plastic, about a foot square.

Thanks. The guy I bought it from had recently restored another one. He told me about the solenoid box and the ground bolt on the connector. He's the one who told me about a possible local source for some of the parts I might need, too. I've got my eye on a box. But, If I can't get it, like someone else said, it wouldn't be too tough to built something similar. As for the cable... whoa! They must be made of gold! I didn't pay that much for the motor. But, it is what it is. I'll probably check locally and if I strike out, try to build one and buy one as a last resort. Though I gotta admit, those are some sharp looking, well made harnesses. Tempting, very tempting!!

Just direct wire that motor. You need two battery cables, ign killer, choke wires, plus ground and +12VDC. The box needs starter solenoid plus power for it.
