?Hello all to my iboats friends; (by the way, I include all of you on iboats forum in my greeting). I may not have talked too many of you personally, but I have read and kept up with a lot of your projects daily over the last year?.
Very brief history about me; very new to boats (already addicted) :D I joined this forum last year under the name Rookiedave. Asked a few questions about a project boat I was going to start. At that point I was laid off from my job (my industry hit hard by recession) and as you can guess my life went a little haywire for a while. Now I am back and gainfully employed and finally in a position to begin working on my ?Dreams?. I could not get logged in under my old name so I created a new Id. ?Monterey Dreams?, which is the name I decided for my boat; Monterey CA, (my favorite place in the world) and this boat which has become my dream slash obsession (I am sure most of you know what I am talking about).
Thanks for your instructions Woodonglass. I can now finally post photos on here.
I have started my project with a paint job of the outer hull. (Probably not where most of you folk would begin a restore) but I am at the mercy of my ?parents?. I made the mistake of buying a home in a gated community and it would be an understatement to say that my association did not like my poor old boat?.So; I took ?her? out to my parent?s ranch in the country. Where she sat out in the back forty all alone, with only the rattlesnakes, and wasps for company for the last year or so (not a happy place for her to be?.or me to work on her).
My parents allowed me to bring her out of exile and up to the front of the property (in avoidance of the snakes and wasps). Their only requirement was that I make her not such an eyesore first. Imagine that. My poor little Dreams called an eyesore!
Anyways sorry for the long first post, just wanted to give you folk a cliff notes version. My following posts will be much smaller.
I am painting her using the roll and tip method discussed here. I not being famously wealthy (obviously I am starting with a 50 odd year old boat). I decided upon using after reading most of the threads here on paint. I went with the old reliable Rustoleum oil based industrial paint. I did not use a hardener. Paint went on decently, in California summer weather dried nicely in few days or week. I cannot put a fingernail through it now after 3 coats. Colors I chose were the hunter green and the gloss white.
All and all, I am happy with my rig. The boat/trailer were basically free from a guy on CL. The motor and controls were free CL also (different guy). I'm a good CL scrounge :D I think the motor will work basically I followed the steps illustrated in the ?Awaking a Sleeping Outboard?. Engine is not frozen and when I applied a jumper cable to the electric starter motor tried to start. No spark I think. I will work on engine later. (In photos the engine missing a fin: I removed it to fit in 55 gal drum to attempt start. The transom feels hard as a rock. And when I drilled holes to mount engine, wood shavings were healthy light color no dark rot.
Anyways I Hope to talk to you folk soon.

My only questions for this posting are do you all think I got something good or not? And do any of you recognize this boat and manufacturer? I have not been able to find anything on it. Title says 1959 Glasscat. Only Glasscat I can find any reference of is made by Glasspar? Does anybody recognize her lines?

Thanks
Dave

Me likey!!! Very funky, but very functional. I've always kind of wanted a Dory set up like that. They seem to be very popular in Europe and England and the WEst coast, but not so much in my neck of the woods. I've never seen one quite liker her, but the fins are super cool and the motor is straight out of star trek. I love 'em both! I can tell you have boat fever, which is great, but resist the urge to have too many plates spinning at one time. Systematically make your way over the boat and motor, and you'll be on the water in no time. Keep us posted. We love pics. Good luck!!!

Thank you all for your kind words. I was wondering a little how she would be reacted to. My wife agrees with you "funky" is an apt description.
Hopefully somebody will recognize her. I would like to see what she should look like in the beginning. I know I am not, but I feel like I have the last one of its type in existence. I cannot find any info on it.

I'm sure someone will recognize her sooner or later, but Fiberglassics.com is a great place to start per the previous post. I say keep the cool external lines untouched and make the paint and interior your own. I saw a thread the other day where the owner had tinted the cabin windows, which looked really sleek, gave additional privacy and kept the cabin much cooler on those hot, sunny days on the water. Can't wait to see what you do with her. Keep us posted. We love pics ;)

That is one unique boat. That surely would have caught my attention had I stumbled across it.

Hi all thanks again for your suggestions. Fiberglassics is a great Idea. I had searched them for info also but I did not think of posting. As to the lines I like how they ended up and am going to keep them. The suggestion about tinting the windows sounds good to me. :D Thinking about it I probably will if I can get it done at a reasonable price. I just got off from work and it is about midnight Cali time so I will post tomorrow. I really do like talking to you all and please keep your suggestions coming, this forum truly is a wonderful resource. As to photos, I will certainly post more this weekend. Since my boat lives a half hour away from me I usually don?t get to tinker with it until Saturday or Sundays.:(

One funny story that I thought you all would like. When I picked it up from the guy in a little city about 30 min from my house. After we made the deal I had to get it home. The trailer had two flat tires and I could see across the street from the shop where I picked it up was a little ?Mexican? tire shop. All signage was handmade and in Spanish. When my gringo self, backed the boat into driveway all 6 or 7 men came out to look at her. They were all talking Spanish and did not realize that I spoke Spanish.
The oldest guy there asked his buddies how many Cubans did they think I smuggled/ or could smuggle onto that boat. They all had a big laugh and so did I.

I don't know if you found out what it is but I can tell you that style of boat is very popular in South Africa. I almost bought a never version of that but someone beat me to it. Cats are very big in many parts of the world and have been for a long time. Australia they are the norm.

On another note. I will never EVER live ANYWHERE that someone else has the right to tell me what color my house can be, how tall my grass can be, how long my garage door can be open AGAIN.

I agree with you kahuna, as soon as I can I am going to sell in here. I think I will suffer a year or two more because the builder is still selling homes and it will be very hard to compete with the corp.

Do you remember the name of the mfg of the boat you looked at. I am trying to get ideas for my boat. thank you.

Re: 1959 ????? Anybody Remember this boat?

Re: 1959 ????? Anybody Remember this boat?

I worked on the boat again yesterday.:D Basically I did a lot of sanding. Over three hours on the underside of the boat alone. I then painted the ?waterline? green on the port side as I have already completed (and photographed for you folk). I will post the photos soon. I need to get them from my dad. Hopefully I will be able to complete the underside portion this weekend. This requires jacking the boat off the trailer for yet more sanding and painting.

Looking ahead, I have a new question for you all. I am planning on installing a deck (along the way that Huron Angler did for his boat). I am like he, I?m using ?scrap? pine planks. I have begun cutting and sanding the planks. I am staining them with Minwax (Sedona Red) three coats and then a coat or two of spar urethane. I was planning on building a ?subfloor? of a thick exterior grade sheeting and coating sealant also. I then plan to screw my decking planks into the subfloor and then sealing again.
My floor in the boat is solid, with no weak spots that I can find. I think that a PO in the past must have redone them. I cannot believe that a 50 plus year old boat has a strong transom and firm deck. I also want the extra flooring because I am a 320 pound man and unfortunately most things bend when I stand on them!
I don?t know how to attach the plywood subfloor to the deck of my boat. I am leery of screwing many little holes into my firm floor and allowing moisture into the interior. Is there some sort of adhesive glue I could use?
Thanks again
Dave

Hi all just a few more photos of what I worked on today. I only had about five hours :( to work so more prep work and painting. I began painting the lower hull between the two hulls and the bow areas of the two hulls. (Hunter Green Color)DSCF5760.jpgDSCF5756.jpgDSCF5758.jpg

Awesome boat! Very unique.

I'm concerned about how much weight you'd be adding with basically 3 layers of deck. Plus if water gets between the layers, it will rot and get even heavier in short order. If the current deck is solid, leave it alone. If it isn't solid, cut it out and replace it with a single 3/4" deck.

Re: 1959 ????? Anybody Remember this boat? (1959 Glasscat Project underway)

Thank you Ezmobee for your input, I always wanted the ?wooden deck? effect with the individual planks. (for ascetics) Do you know of a way I could do it without so much added weight? (There is only going to be me and my wife on it). I think the current deck is sound. I could not find any soft spots so far. The only problem is that it is very, very, ugly. I don?t want to put carpet down because of fear of rot. I am very new to this whole thing so please bear with me. If I coat the deck ?layers? with a sealant like spar urethane or a Tompkins would the deck still rot? Could I make the ?wood? deck removable and store in garage when not in use? Would rot be a problem in a garage setting?
Thank you also for your kind words Alwhite00

Re: 1959 ????? Anybody Remember this boat? (1959 Glasscat Project underway)

I had the same fear with carpet (and also had prior experience with it and it was always filthy) and I went with a marine vinyl floor in my current boat. I'm very pleased with it: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2504.jpg I still used carpet for the side panels and my bow deck. Obviously this would not give you the wood look you're looking for but it is fairly easy to work with and seems to me to be very durable.

I don't have any knowledge to offer up regarding a wood plank deck. A couple members here have done them but they have been in aluminum hulls where the deck is not a structural element and is not tied to the sides of the boat. In your fiberglass hull (and I'd think even more so being a catamaran type deal) the deck is a structural element and needs to be tabbed to the hull sides with fiberglass (as your existing one surely is).
