?Hello all to my iboats friends; (by the way, I include all of you on iboats forum in my greeting). I may not have talked too many of you personally, but I have read and kept up with a lot of your projects daily over the last year?.
Very brief history about me; very new to boats (already addicted)
I joined this forum last year under the name Rookiedave. Asked a few questions about a project boat I was going to start. At that point I was laid off from my job (my industry hit hard by recession) and as you can guess my life went a little haywire for a while. Now I am back and gainfully employed and finally in a position to begin working on my ?Dreams?. I could not get logged in under my old name so I created a new Id. ?Monterey Dreams?, which is the name I decided for my boat; Monterey CA, (my favorite place in the world) and this boat which has become my dream slash obsession (I am sure most of you know what I am talking about).
Thanks for your instructions Woodonglass. I can now finally post photos on here.
I have started my project with a paint job of the outer hull. (Probably not where most of you folk would begin a restore) but I am at the mercy of my ?parents?. I made the mistake of buying a home in a gated community and it would be an understatement to say that my association did not like my poor old boat?.So; I took ?her? out to my parent?s ranch in the country. Where she sat out in the back forty all alone, with only the rattlesnakes, and wasps for company for the last year or so (not a happy place for her to be?.or me to work on her).
My parents allowed me to bring her out of exile and up to the front of the property (in avoidance of the snakes and wasps). Their only requirement was that I make her not such an eyesore first. Imagine that. My poor little Dreams called an eyesore!
Anyways sorry for the long first post, just wanted to give you folk a cliff notes version. My following posts will be much smaller.
I am painting her using the roll and tip method discussed here. I not being famously wealthy (obviously I am starting with a 50 odd year old boat). I decided upon using after reading most of the threads here on paint. I went with the old reliable Rustoleum oil based industrial paint. I did not use a hardener. Paint went on decently, in California summer weather dried nicely in few days or week. I cannot put a fingernail through it now after 3 coats. Colors I chose were the hunter green and the gloss white.
All and all, I am happy with my rig. The boat/trailer were basically free from a guy on CL. The motor and controls were free CL also (different guy). I'm a good CL scrounge
I think the motor will work basically I followed the steps illustrated in the ?Awaking a Sleeping Outboard?. Engine is not frozen and when I applied a jumper cable to the electric starter motor tried to start. No spark I think. I will work on engine later. (In photos the engine missing a fin: I removed it to fit in 55 gal drum to attempt start. The transom feels hard as a rock. And when I drilled holes to mount engine, wood shavings were healthy light color no dark rot.
Anyways I Hope to talk to you folk soon.
My only questions for this posting are do you all think I got something good or not? And do any of you recognize this boat and manufacturer? I have not been able to find anything on it. Title says 1959 Glasscat. Only Glasscat I can find any reference of is made by Glasspar? Does anybody recognize her lines?
Thanks
Dave
