recently bought a rich line with a 1959 johnson 18 hp fd 13. it hadnt run in quite some time and my knowledge in this area is very limited. after an in spection of the plugs which were new and new fuel with some sea foam it began to run a bit. the carb looked rather clean for a 50+ year old machine so i assumed it had been gone through already but i went ahead and removed it and took it apart... it was really clean... slapped that sucker back on and fired her up. she didnt run real good but i adjusted the lean rich and fast idle screw to the point where it will idle and run. took it on a maiden voyage and she ran good. i dont believe i am getting up to the needed wot 4500 rpm rang though. itll get close and then just bog down??? any ideas? id like a real detailed desription of how to properly adjust the lean rich and fast idle screws. she doesnt get very good fuel enconomy either... im lucky if a 6 gal tank will take me 5 or 6 miles. any hints or tips??? theres not too many vintage engine service marines around here so its all diy hahaha. thanks!

Initial settings are 1.5 turns out from gently seated for the low speed needle (top one), and 3/4 turn out from gently seated for the high speed needle (lower one).

To adjust the high speed needle, take her for a rip at WOT. Slowly, giving the motor time to respond, start turning the needle in, clockwise, in small increments until it starts to backfire or want to die, then back it back out 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn will be the ideal position.

To adjust the slow speed needle, idle the motor, and slowly, giving the motor time to respond, start turning the needle in, clockwise until it starts to mildly backfire or want to die, then back it back out 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn will be the ideal position.

I tend to leave it a tad rich to prevent damage.

Have you pulled the inspection port in the flywheel to check the ignition and see if the coils are original? If they are they will be cracked and will need to be replaced.

to be honest i have no idea what youre talking about as far as location of an inspection port. i can only assume at this time that the coils are original. but if i go and replace coils and since im there anyway should i just wrap it up with contacts and condenser? and im not too sure on how to set the timing on it. thanks for the help on the carb though!

for some...using the terms " this ol turd" for a 1959 18 hp fd 13 is akin to kicking their dog...ya know beauty is in the eye of the beholder
