Hi,
I have a mid 1960's 60hp V4, model# 60553C that's giving me problems. It's very hard to start and when I can get it going it won't rev and tends to die after a few minutes. I was given the boat & motor so don't know exactly when last run but about 10 years ago.
Here's what I've done:
Replaced the impeller and lower unit oil
Checked timing & point gap
Checked for sheared flywheel key
Cleaned carb
Confirmed fuel pump working
Measured resistance at points (coil seems good)
Changed ignition switch (3 lug version but have jumped coil wire to battery)
I consider myself a pretty good mechanic (I run a shop and fix other people's stuff), but this one has me stumped. It'll crank and fire but not stay running, but sometimes it will run for a while, while other times it'll just build up fuel in the cylinders until it goes BOOM and my dog looks at me like I'm some kind of international terrorist. Please tell me it's something stupid like the wrong ignition switch (does anyone have a spare #25 key?), or bad condenser....
TIA,
John
