Re: 1960 18 hp. FastWin fuel pump

You can order one at laingsoutboards.com but before you do what is it doing? 1960 models all had fuel pumps (except the gravity fed 3hp).There's two possible sources for extra fuel if you rule out outright leaking. One is the fuel pump and the other is the carburetor. The fuel pump is easy to check. Unscrew the two screws that attach it to the engine and loosen it off. Then pump the primer bulb and observe if any fuel leaks out the small hole in the back of it.If that checks out, it's on to the carburetor. Possibilities include leaking needle & seat, improperly adjusted float, sunk float, leaking gaskets. All these things can be rectified with a carb kit. Finally, your '60 ought to have adjustable high speed and low speed mixture controls. Were they adjusted properly? Also, don't use starter fluid in that outboard. It has no oil in it and it's just not good for the engine.Next, the fuel:eek:il mixture for that engine should be 24:1. Put some of that in a spray bottle and use instead of starter fluid.Your next step should be to check compression on both cylinders and check for a good spark on both plugs. Don't do anything until you do those two things.Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the quit reply HighTrim.
Carb has been cleaned and rebuilt.New coils, points and condensers, thermostat, complete water pump assembly.

The outboard engine purrs like a kitten.

The Diaphragms,I think are the original ones. I wanted to rebuild the fuel pump before it lets me down.

Thanks,Jimmy

Since it may have been replaced sometime in it's history, there is no way of telling which fuel pump yuo have on that motor. The original is not repairable any more because all parts have been obsolete for about 30 years. The solution is simple though. Just slap on a new pump. They have them here at iboats. Part number 18-7351. The hose fittings come out at a different angle, but so what?
