1960 Evinrude 40 horse power model # 35520 Serial #23925

My boyfriend gave me a 1960 Evinrude that has been sitting in his backyard for 9 years. I have put a new ignition, starter, solenoid, and rewired all the wiring. When you turn the key nothing happens. the old starter would spin every once in a great while but the appendix was bad. Now it just won't do anything. I have tried starting it right off the starter and all it will do is spin the fly wheel around slowly and then stop, then it will spin slowly again and stop. Would releasing some of the compression help? We have tried pull starting it but it pulls VERY hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If ay one could get me a wiring diagram for this boat would be wounderful. Thanks

p.s if any one would happen to know where I could get a motor cable for this thing might help. It plugs into the side of the motor and goes to the electric start box in the right corner on the back of the boat.

Have you taken the starter to an auto parts store to check it ? This is a good place to start before tearing the engine apart.

Also i'm pretty sure it's a standard shift. There is a lever next to the throttle that is used to put it in forward neutral and reverse. I don't know much about boats, can you tell?

Re: 1960, 40 h.p. Evinrude-won't run

The 1960 Evinrude 40 only came with manual shift. The selectric was offered starting in 1961.

The compression relief valves are actuated by the pull starter. They do not engage during electric start, as the starter has plenty of torque to spin the engine.

Check to make sure that the ignition coils are not rubbing against the flywheel magnets. This was my first mistake when rebuilding mine. You need a special tool to align the coils.

Used wiring harnesses are often available on eBay. Search with Evinrude 40* .

the battery is good i've recharged it after every try just to be sure. I even took the battery out of truck and tried that to. The WD-40 thing seems to be helping a little. A small engine mechanic in town told me to do the same thing. Keep up the good work! :D

Pull your flywheel and see if there is rubbing on the magnets from the coils being mis-aligned.

This (among other things) will precisely cause the hard pull circumstance on that engine.
