I am pulling my old glastron fireflite out of storage. Only problem is that the motor on it, 1960 Elgin, has a cracked lower unit. My dad has told me that it leaks oil. I don't have a lot of info on the crack bc I won't see it for myself until I pick the boat up.
I've been reading that oil leaking out of a crack in the lower unit is essently a death warrant for the motor, especially an older one like this. Is there any way to repair such a crack? Is it possible to find a lower unit elgins? I want to get this motor working for now, if possible, and look into purchasing a newer motor down the road.

Once upon a time I had a 120 Chrysler that developed a crack in the lower unit. The dealer told me it was $1200 plus labor or he could patch it with Marine Tex for about $20.00. Had it done and it had to be redone a year or two later. Obviously the way to go. You can also find; if your patient, a replacement lower unit on ebay. They should be dirt cheap. I'd patch it for now and keep an eye out.
