But when it try's to start somtimes i get backfire and other times it starts to run but then dies and is very hard to restart.
I have the engine sitting on a stand in a barrall of water but i can see oil and the smell of gas in the water do you know what this means.

No different than any other motor, it needs certain things to run. Spark, Compression and fuel. The spark has to be adequate and at the right time. Likewise, compression has to be adequate. And fuel in the right amount. Get these things right and it will run.

Start with a compression test. Follow with a spark test. Sparks should jump a 1/4" gap on all plug wires. Jumping the plug gap, laying against the head is not an adequate indicator. You say you checked the timing, so let's assume you know how the timing is supposed to be. You already dove into the carb, so let that go for now.

Of course you have fuel on the water. You are pumping it through the engine without burning it. Even when everything is perfect, you will have fuel on the water. But that's another topic.

check the woodruff key on the flywheel it is the little metal piece in the groove of the shaft and the flywheel, if it is broken or just the slight bit off, the timing will bo off causing a backfire.

Re: 1960 75hp starflight

I just took a short trip to www.old-omc.de/Index2.html and looked up the specs on a '60 75 Starflite. Shows and says it has a belt driven distributor type magneto.

Then went over to www.old-engine.com/maglma.htm and refreshed my memory on magneto's switching device; ignition points.

So, there are a couple more areas you can look into to help and solve your problem. Seems to me that you are short on fire, not fuel, and this could be as simple as replacing the points and condenser or the drive belt. Additionally, there is some sort of alignment required to get the timing right so you have to find someone who know hows to set that up. Your timing will be affected by your point gap and any slop in the belt or any rotary components. Your misfiring can easily be caused by dirty/pitted points. I do not know what the gap on that engine is supposed to be.
