i am ready to work on the ignition. Sat at the dock all day with plenty of crank but no kick. Has new head, plugs-compression is good. The manual Ive been using says to remove the big round thing on top (flywheel?) and then talks about coil, points syncronization, pick up points, etc. Sounds complicated. Is this something a first timer and a manual can do successfully. And what would availability on parts be for an old motor. I did the head myself but this sounds complicated

From what I just read, I give you two thumbs up for ability to figure out this motor. We could use a little more info on your problem. Purhaps if you could run a compression test, spark test(will all sparkplug wires make a spark 7/16" gap, etc. or in this case there is a lot of good info in the first catagory.

If you did the head, you can do the ignition!<br /><br />Welcome aboard,<br /><br />Have you checked the spark first? the spark should be able to jump a 1/4" gap with a real snapping blue arc.<br /><br />You may also need to look at the carb.<br /><br />If you need to pull the flywheel, you will need a harmonic balancer puller. It's seems hard, the flywheel nut it real tight on these bigtwin motors (105 ft/lbs). If you have electric start, you can stop the motor turning over by jamming a piece of hard plastic in between the starter and the flywheel.<br /><br />It may be a good idea to look over some old posts as well. <br /><br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=032975#000006 <br /><br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033529#000000

Hey there PDS, typed right over you. On the bigtwins, a 7/16" gap is a bit of a stretch. The magneto ignition in these won't reliably jump that much of a gap. if it jumps 1/4", as I said, with a strong blue arc(you can here it snap) it's ok.

Hey!<br /><br />Could you tell us what your compression numbers are on this engine.<br /><br />"Good" is good to one person but mite not be so good to another person.<br /><br />Good Luck!

Re: 1960 evinrude 35520 40hp ignition

Thanks for all the input and attagirls. Did the spark test before I changed head-it was good, Reading posts I saw 24 to 1 gas mix. I'm doing 50 to 1. Could that be my problem? And for carb I have a can of evinrude carb cleaner but I haven't been able to keep it running like the directions on the can say so I haven't used it. Ive got the J6 plugs in it.

50:1 is not your problem, and likely you haven't hurt the engine by running it. But do switch to 24:1.<br /><br />When you performed a spark test, what sort of gap were you able to jump? Did you test both lines?

Re: 1960 evinrude 35520 40hp ignition

I'd second Paul's recommendation. Use 24:1 on your old Big Twin.<br /><br />And do check the spark before you start pulling the flywheel. If you have no spark, there are a couple of things to test before pulling the flywheel.<br /><br />Ignition and carburetor parts are a snap to find for your engine. Any NAPA auto parts dealer can order them for you. The problem is in knowing just what to order, and that's a diagnostic problem.<br /><br />So, if you do have good spark, the next thing to start thinking about is fuel. You said the engine wouldn't fire at all. Try a quick spray with pre-mixed fuel in a spray bottle...right into the throat of the carb. If the engine's going to fire, it will fire then.<br /><br />If it does, then it's time to start tracking down why the carb isn't getting fuel to the engine. Start with the fuel lines, then check the fuel pump by pulling the hose that goes from it to the carb, then cranking the engine. Fuel should pump out of that hose. If it does, then it'll be time to rebuild that carburetor. If you need to do that, get a carb kit from your local Johnnyrude dealer...it has the new-style float in it. Then, you'll need to soak the disassembled carb in carburetor cleaner and blow out all the passages with compressed air.<br /><br />If it doesn't fire with the spray, then we'll go on from there.
