Ok, have a 1960 evinrude 5.5 hp fisherman.. wana change the water pump impeller. Question. where do you disconect the shift linkage to drop the lower. its not obvious from the diagram and i am pretty sure that the little screw at the bottom undoes the shifting fork but not sure. pretty sure I dont want to diconect the shifting fork in lower. not familiar with this old bugger thought I had better check.

If there isn't an oval shaped access cover on the starboard side of the exhaust housing, then remove the bolts holding the lower unit to the exhaust housing, and pull the l/u down about a half inch. This should give you room to remove the lower bolt in the brass shift rod connection.

Sorry , but you have to remove the powerhead on this model.-- Shift rod disconnects at the top.-----Allows you to do maintenace of the on the upper seal assembly too.

racerone you gotta be right because it has a solid shift rod. no brass conector on this. thats what puzzled me for a moment, but I suspected as much.
Well gonna need a few seals for that too then. Do ya know which ones off hand??

Well, you will need a new powerhead gasket. And at the very least, replace the 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring, both part of the seal assembly. That seal is vitally important to the life of the motor, so make sure it is all good.

EDIT: Powerhead gasket is 313065 (18-2901 here at iboats)
303347 is iboats 18-7120
303355 is iboats 18-2892
