Model # 35521. The belt that goes around the flywheel and generator pulley broke . Also the pulley seems to have separated (like into a top and bottom section -- I'll bet that's why the belt broke). How much of a job am I getting into if I attempt repairs myself. I am mechanically inclined so that's not an issue but I am new to working on a boat motor but hopefully that's not an issue. I wonder if a new pulley and belt for it are even still available? The belt still has the number on it -- Goodyear # 307577. How much "stuff" do I have to take off in order to get to where the belt has to go? Yes, I have the seloc manual for it but that book is still sort of greek to me. I see many problem answered in plain english on this site that's why I like this site so much. Thanks in advance Guys and/or Gals.

I have an 1964 Evinrude Lark 40hp and last year I replaced the generator and belt, genorator was $150.00 (rebuilt) and the belt was $50.00! Good luck finding one....we have a guy out here that deals in the old stuff as well as new so I got pretty lucky, most of the marine places I've been don't go very far back for parts, then I found this guy.

Sorry....as far as putting the belt on....you remove the bolts holding on the pull start assembly (if it has one) to get to the flywheel, after you get that far remove the bolt on top of the flywheel and with a flywheel puller (or a prybar and a hammer like me....CAREFULLY!!) remove the flywheel from the crank shaft, be sure not to lose the woodruff key (it recommended that you replace it). The belt pully is under the flywheel. It would also be to your benefit to put some new coils, points and wires since all that is also housed under the flywheel :p . Good luck!!

NOTE.... You DO NOT remove the flywheel. The generator belt is attached to a pulley on top of the flywheel. I'll check the remainder of my stock and get back to you pertaining to the pulley, belt, etc.

Glen.... If you're mechanically inclined, removing and installing the pulley is childs play. The pulley is designed so that you can grab onto the bottom portion of it with a wrench while removing or installing the retaining nut.

I do not have the belt. However I do have the pulley and covering flange which I will discount. Should you have a problem finding those two items, contact me at ReevesJ32@aol.com

Yes, good luck indeed if you pull the flywheel with a prybar and hammer. Honestly, don't do it. Use a flywheel or harmonic balancer puller with grade 8 bolts. I used grade 5 and got away with it but others will be able to tell you horror stories of their own.
Check out the photo posted by KewlBird in this post. You'll see the belt running on top of the flywheel under the recoil starter.

The ignition is under the flywheel.
