Hello everyone I have a 1960 evinrude / johnson 40hp outboard and have some questions / problems I thought you could help me with.

Engine starts for a few seconds and dies. Have new plastic fuel tank, does this need to be vented in a special way? Could there be too much pressure or vacuum in tank (not really sure how fuel system this works)

I can see a glass fuel indicator on side of engine. What level should fuel be at for normal operation? Currently its starts full when you pump the fuel bulb and then goes to around half full.

There is a needle valve at bottom of carburetor. When the needle is screwed out, does this add or lesson fuel enrichment or does this adjust amount of air?

For the life of me, I can't understand how the battery is charged. I don't see a generator bridge rectifier or voltage regulator. Does the battery get charged at all on these old systems?

I have a general purpose manual that covers a hole range of motors. Where can I get a specific manual for this engine?

Thanks for any help

Re: 1960 Evinrude Questions

If it is like any other outboard the stator is under the flywheel and the magnets are on the bottom side of the flywheel
