Greetings one and all. I'm brand new to iBoats and wanted to introduce myself as I have a ton of questions. Yes, I have read as many threads as possible relating to most of the issues I'm dealing first but am still unclear on some of them. Anyway...my name is Bryan, I'm 57 yrs. old and just recently bought a 1960 Evinrude Sportwin 10 HP model-10020 Outboard. Got it for $50.00 along with 2 6 gallon tanks and hose. Thought it would be a great summer project. I am not the greatest mechanic, have never worked on or owned an OBM, but have been working on my own cars and trucks for over 30 years and have gotten pretty good at it. I love tearing things apart and figuring out how they run and I figured there could only be so much to this little 2 stroke motor. Right? Uh....guess I'll find out. Okay, sorry for the boring intro, onto question #1....
Disclaimer: Since I'm brand new to all this I may not always use the proper terminology for some of the parts but will do my best. Please feel free to correct me and inform me as needed.
Throttle/Tiller handle
Okay, mine was missing the white block (part #0303282) that the spring goes up against. Got that now but no matter what order I put things together the gear shaft pushes away from the motor now. Does that make sense? It can't be right because this means in order to keep any throttle control on the motor you constantly have to be pushing in on the tiller handle and if you let go that means it disengages and if you need to slow down or speed up you can't. I have studied the diagram as best I can on MarineEngine.com and I don't see any other way for it to go. It would actually make more sense in my mind if the spring would go between the white "block" and the outer grip so you would actually pull out/away from the motor compressing the spring so that when you let go the gear shaft would be forced back toward the motor. But I've tried and can't get the assembly back together doing it that way. Also according to the diagram the spring should be on the opposite side of the block towards the motor. Hope I'm describing this well enough so you have a clear enough picture to help out. Can someone please help me out and advise what order stuff goes in and if I'm possibly missing some other key part(s)? Basically in this order this is what I have.....
Pistol grip to white block (with little wings that apparently fit into the indentations on the handle) to spring to metal washer. The metal washer is just after the little "groove pin" that crosses through the gear shaft. See attached pic.
Thanks very much for any help.
