I have a 1960 40 horse Evinrude and the cylinders are locked up with corrosion. Its been sitting for 9 years. Any ideas on how to free them up? Is there a way to get the plates off that cover them and get right to the cylinders and how would I free them up if I could get right to them? horseelady@excite.com  :p

Re: 1960 Evinrude

Hello.
For starters You should take the spark plugs out and spray a lot of good penetrating oil in the cylinders. Then let it sit for 24 hours.Check then if you can turn the flywheel with your spark plugs out of the cylinders and your gear in neutral. While you are waiting for the penetrating oil to do its job,you should go out and get a manual for your engine.
I have the feeling that if the cylinders are frozen there might be a few bolts with the same problem,so be very careful not to break any bolts while trying to remove a cylinder head.
Good luck.
