I was wondering if on the 60-5.5hp Evinrude Fisherman, If you have to remove the power head to get to the water pump impeller like the earlier models.
Also on 1 site I found covering older models, he recommended putting a thin layer of silicone on the matting surface between the lower unit and the mid section.
Is this advisable? If so what type? Silicone grease, or sealer (adhesive)?
My concerns with sealer:
Put on properly it is a formidable opponent for future removal.
The acid in general purpose silicone adhesive is corrosive.

Yes you do. The only 'fixed' that in '65 with the move to the 5 and 6hp models.
There is no need nor reason to put sealant between the midsection and the lower unit. It wasn't there from the factory and it does nothing good. Personally, I don't use silicone sealant anywhere on an outboard. Not just because of the acetic acid, but also because RTV silicone is intolerant of most outboard fluids. And everything in a 2-stroke outboard sees fuel on it eventually.
I do put a thin layer of sealant between the lower unit and the stainless wear plate, but others don't and seem to get good service. For that I use permatex #2 non hardening sealant.
Hope this helps!

PS - if you haven't seen it already, check out Tom Travis' 5.5hp website:
http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/Johnson 5.5 HP Seahorse Outboard Boat Motor/default.htm
